Sample Section 1
Position from VOR Using Radials

With the CDI needle centered, the aircraft is located directly on one of the VOR radials. When you determine the radial, you immediately know the position of the aircraft relative to the VOR station.

With the needle centered and a FROM indication, this aircraft is located on the outbound portion of 240° Course, on the 240° radial. The aircraft is southwest of the station.

With the needle centered and a TO indication, this aircraft is located on the inbound portion of the 285° course, on the 105° radial. The aircraft is southeast of the station.

Tips and Tricks
To see the aircraft’s position relative to the station, cover the half of the course dial that matches the TO/FROM indicator. The end of the centered CDI needle has the radial on which the aircraft is located.
